Environmental Initiatives

The Town of New Castle has demonstrated that the local government of a small community with limited financial resources can take actions that have positive effects on the environment. New Castle’s environmental initiatives include the following:

  • Placing photovoltaic panels on the Public Works Facility.
  • Adopting the 2009 International Energy Conservation Codes.
  • Seeking to add a microhydroelectric plant.
  • Recycling wastewater treatment plant effluent to reduce use of treated water.
  • Upgrading pumps in the water treatment system.
  • Replacing inefficient lighting fixtures in Town facilities.
  • Installing water-conserving toilets in Town Hall and the Community Center.
  • Converting wastewater disinfection from a chemical process to an ultraviolet light process.
  • Changing water rate tiers to encourage water conservation.

Town Council is committed to extending the scope of these initiatives and to adopting additional policies that will foster responsible environmental practices.
