The Building Department is housed with the Planning Department for the convenience of our customers. We strive to serve the community by providing prompt, courteous and efficient service. The Building Department handles all matters relating to construction within the Town of New Castle.
To obtain a building permit, complete a permit application and submit it to the Building Department, along with three complete sets of plans. The plans should include an engineered foundation, construction drawings and a site plan. It is strongly recommended that an applicant contact us for a pre-application meeting.
The permit review process takes approximately two to three weeks. If the application is incomplete the building permit will be delayed until all required documents are received. The review includes compliance with the Town’s zoning and land use code, the building codes and, if applicable, compliance with the historical characteristics in the R-1 and C-1 zone districts. The review process begins only when the application is complete. Once the review is complete, fees will be calculated and the permit will be ready for issuance.
A permit is not required for fences; however please call Paul Smith at (970) 984-2311 for code requirements regarding the allowable height in your zone district. It is also recommended that you contact Paul Smith if you plan on constructing or purchasing a pre-manufactured storage shed.
Plumbing and mechanical permits are also required and can be issued at the same time as the building permit. Applications are needed for both, as they are based on what is installed in the building.
After obtaining a building permit, please call Paul Smith to schedule inspections. Our Town utilizes contract Building Officials and, therefore, a 48 hour notice is required for inspections.
All fees are due at the time the permit is issued.
All contractors and subcontractors are required to have a valid Town of New Castle Contractor’s License.
