Grand Avenue Bridge   Construction Update
The construction activity for the week of: January 25 -31, 2016
  • Starting January 27, I-70 eastbound at exit 116 will be reduced to one lane of traffic. This closure will be until the end of the year.
  • On Monday January 25 through Thursday January 28, SH 82 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction, 9 am to 3 pm off peak hours. CDOT will be removing trees to prepare for the new pedestrian bridge.
  • Anticipate some construction work on the weekends. Due to the recent snowfall some construction will done on the weekends to stay with the schedule. The contractor must meet the deadline of March 1, 2016 for fish spawning season.
Traffic impacts:  7th Street, closure from Colorado Avenue to Cooper Street and Wing Street closure.
  • Beginning Monday January 18, 7th St. will be closed from Colorado Avenue to Cooper Avenue from 7am to 5 pm. Wing Street will be closed at 8th St. to 7th St. during this period for vehicular traffic.
  • The eastbound lane of 7th St. will be open after working hours, 5 pm to 7 am.
  • Beginning March 1, 2016, Wing Street will close permanently.

Grand Avenue Bridge   Construction Update
The construction activity for the week of: January 18 – 24, 2016
  • Utility work: temporary storm drain relocation and permanent waterline installation
  • Construction of southern causeway: Up to 75 trucks will be dumping & hauling.
  • Shoring and excavation work at the south bridge pier
  • Construction hours will be 7 am to 5 pm every day. There will be no construction activity during the weekends.
Traffic impacts:  7th Street, closure from Colorado Avenue to Cooper Street and Wing Street closure.
  • Beginning Monday January 18, 7th St. will be closed from Colorado Avenue to Cooper Avenue from 7am to 5 pm. Wing Street will be closed at 8th St. to 7th St. during this period for vehicular traffic.
  • The 7th St. closure from Colorado Avenue to Cooper Avenue will be a “rolling closure”. This area is a highly affected project area.
  • Beginning March 1, 2016, Wing Street will close permanently.

Grand Avenue Bridge Colorado River Safety Advisory – JAN – MARCH 2016

ATTENTION COLORADO RIVER RAFTERS, FISHING, AND RECREATION COMMUNITY

The Grand Avenue Bridge (GAB) project begins construction along the river bank of the Colorado River on the south bank and on the north bank from the Glenwood Springs Amtrak Station to the City of Glenwood Springs wastewater pump station. Beginning Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016 construction activities will be ongoing in this area throughout the year along the riverbank, however, work in the Colorado River will finish by March 1, 2016. The contractor is working in the Colorado River at this time because of low recreational use and timing of the fish spawning period.

  • Completion of the railroad crossing
  • Construction of southern causeway: Up to 75 trucks will be dumping & hauling.
  • Removal of public restrooms and existing walls under existing GAB on north side of 7th Street.
  • Construction hours will be 7 am to 5 pm every day. There will be no construction activity during the weekends.
Traffic impacts:  Expect 7th Street periodic closures to allow trucks access, these closures will be ongoing for the next 5-6 weeks. The north lane of 7th Street will be closed from Colorado Ave to Cooper Ave. will be closed during this 5-6 weeks period; the south lane will be open to eastbound traffic only.

  • Trucks will be dumping and hauling construction materials during the day. Expect up to 75 trucks per day during this period.
  • Construction hours will be 7 am to 5 pm every day. There will be no construction activity during the weekends.
Traffic impacts:  Expect 7th Street closures to allow trucks access. On January 5, the north lane of 7th Street will be closed to set up barriers.

Candidates for the April 5, 2016 Election

 

The New Castle Town Clerk’s Office has received five nomination petitions from citizens interested in being elected to a seat on the Town Council. There are three council seats up for election on the April 5, 2016 ballot.

Town Clerk Melody Harrison, CMC, and Deputy Town Clerk Mindy Andis drew names for the ballot order.

 

 

Your Council Seat Candidates are:

Grady Hazelton

Mr. Hazelton has lived in the New Castle area since 1969. He and his wife, Suzanne, and their children Sophie and Brian, have made New Castle their home for the past three years.

Mr. Hazelton is a restaurant owner. If elected, this will be his first experience in government.

 

 

 

 

 

 Merle Means (incumbent)

Mr. Means and his wife Leslie have lived in New Castle for 16 years. He has served on Town Council from 2008 to 2010 and again 2012 to the present. Mr. Means has served on various Town commissions such as Climate Action Advisory, Planning and Zoning, Parks, Open Space Trails & Recreation, and the Historic Preservation Commission. He is currently an alternate for Garfield County Senior Programs Board. He is a Vietnam Veteran, has a dual degree from University of Washington, Seattle, and has had a wide variety of life experience. He has gone from Police to Pulpit to Property Management, as well as a few self-employment businesses along the way.

Mr. Means is currently the Property Manager for Manor’s I & II Senior Apartments in Glenwood Springs

 Mary Metzger (incumbent)

Mrs. Metzger and her husband Larry have lived in New Castle for 10 years. She has served on the Town Council since 2010 and on the Garfield County Senior Programs Board since 2012. Mrs. Metzger has been involved in many other organizations including the Castle Valley Ranch HOA, the River Center and the Downtown Group.

Mrs. Metzger owns her own interior design and nutritional business.

 Patrick Stuckey (incumbent)

Mr. Stuckey and his wife Ann have lived in New Castle for 10 years. He has served on the Town Council since 2010. Mr. Stuckey has served on various other town boards such as Climate Action Advisory Commission, Historic Preservation and Planning & Zoning. He currently sits on the Design Review Committee for Lakota Canyon Ranch as well as the RFTA Board. He is an alternate member for Garfield Clean Energy.

Mr. Stuckey is self-employed as a registered architect.



 Graham Riddile

Mr. Riddile grew up in New Castle. He and his wife Alisha returned here after college.

Mr. Riddile has served four years on the Planning & Zoning Commission, and is Vice President of the Board of Directors for the River Center. He hopes to help develop New Castle into a recreational hub that is affordable while maintaining it’s strong family environment.

Mr. Riddile is a Project Engineer with the Colorado Department of Transportation.
